India...May 16

Today was day 3 of both our Kids Camp and English Classes. The kids have really warmed up to us and it is great to see their faces light up when the come by rickshaws from the slums. Today’s story time focused on Daniel and the Lion’s Den. The kids (and staff for that matter) really enjoyed making lion masks. It's hard to believe our first kids camp is over already. The kids enjoyed getting some special prizes such as book bags and school supply cases.

One cool thing that happened today was we were able to provide a pair of shoes for each of the children who have been a part of the kids camp. We began by washing their feet which was a pretty humbling experience. After which, we sized them for shoes and placed their new shoes on them (we brought about 125 pairs of shoes from the States). The kids wrote their names as well as PMI on the shoes to ensure that they keep them and don’t “wander off”.

Our English camp continues to go well. Deeper relationships are forming and that is exciting for everyone involved. After each lesson and game, we break into separate groups based on their English speaking abilities. Here in these groups are where some of the deepest relationships are being formed…plus they’re improving on their English. Our next English class occurs on Tuesday.

We had the evening to ourselves so we were taken to a mall that’s about an hour away or so. It provided a sharp contrast of the various parts of India. The mall strip literally looked like a Vegas strip. The stores were prominent and expensive…so we didn’t buy much. But it provided a great contrast as we’re able to see the poor of the poor right next to some of the wealthiest people in the country.

Paul, Mike and I were truly touched by the feet washing and distribution of shoes. It brought tears to our eyes. We are so proud of all of you and know that God will richly bless your efforts. Love and prayers to all. Mike & Cindy Schaap
